Stortorget (the Great Square) in Karlshamn is a magnificent public space, which acts as the city’s living room. The ambition underlying this proposal is to achieve conceptual simplicity and a lightness in materials. Three core elements give the square its identity at present: the comprehensive use of stone to treat the ground plane, the mature linden trees that bear witness to the square’s history, and the water of the small pond in which the statue “Böljelek” is located. The renewal of the square takes these three elements as its point of departure. The entire city center is heritage-listed at the national level, a cultural heritage status which demands sensitivity on the part of the designer. Recognizing this, the design prioritized both the site-specific character and unique historical development of the square throughout a range of periods.
